The Shabby Chic Gift Giver
Now that we are well into 2015, I am on the hunt for shabby chic bargains – I have a large family and some very close friends and they all have birthdays so it’s important if I want to continue each year to recognize these special days for special people that I bargain hunt the year round. And each year, Christmas seems to arrive earlier; every year seems shorter than the last one.
Perhaps you think it’s a bit early in the year to be talking about Christmas but it is such an amazing time of good will that I think it deserves more of our attention than the twelve retail weeks leading up to it and, of course, the traditional twelve days of Christmas when we put up our tree and have fun decorating it then pull it all down once we’ve reached Day 12.
It’s a time of the year I adore – whether I’m spending it on the beach eating salads and sandwiches in good old New Zealand; or in Europe or the UK having a lovely time all wrapped up against the cold by a cosy fire, enjoying traditional roast dinners and plum puddings.
Christmas is, universally, a season of good will – people seem to have more time to stop and chat, blow a kiss, pass on a smile, give gifts, encourage, laugh more, and sing wonderful feel-good songs.
You may wonder, “How does she afford all this year long gift giving? Is she wealthy?”
Well, the answer is a very definite NO. I have never had more than I needed – but I have always had enough and somehow the resources are always there. Plus I’m frugal but with a mindful eye on value.
For instance, I love a bargain – I seem to have a nose for them – and I have been living my shabby chic lifestyle for so long it’s a part of me. I am constantly on the lookout for bargains and somehow, when I need something, it is always there. I’ve even been known to trip over the odd one (but that’s another story).
What gives my crafty, shabby chic loving heart so much pleasure is being able to match the right gift with the right person because I don’t necessarily always have a particular person in mind when I find what I call a Bingo Bargain. I just buy it – sometimes after a little bartering – take it home and add it to the collection and when a birthday or a special occasion comes around I just muddle through my box of goodies and fish out one I know will make my giftee happy. The other great thing about these Bingo Bargains is that, when I’ve finished titivating, they usually look worth far more than I paid for them.
And where do I find them, you ask? Well, just about anywhere from post-Christmas and New Year sales; other retailers’ sales throughout the year; Op shops (of which there are many – almost every charity has their own shop now), second hand shops, garage sales, car boot sales, fetes and galas and online sites for new and old of just about everything you can imagine from cars to pin cushions.
You see, this is just one part of the Shabby Chic lifestyle I have been personally living for years, since my children were small in fact and, when I think of it, even before that. It’s in me, this desire to bag-a-bargain – I think I must have been born with it. Finding, creating and recreating, and giving wonderful treasures is one of the things I live for and, believe me, it is fun, fun, FUN! In this age of vintage popularity it is no longer embarrassing to admit that the adorable little lace dress you are wearing and that is being eyed up enviously is pre-owned, or that exquisite white dresser very French looking dresser was a battered old thing, painted dark green and missing a leg, when you got your hands on it.
As you can see, there are certain things you can do all year round to ease the pocket for gift buying and home enhancement as you create your shabby chic lifestyle.
Next week we will talk about crafts and making your own little treasures. In the meantime, do keep an eye out and start building your own gift collection.
